 Animals in Kenya

BUFFALLOS (Syncenus caffer )

Buffalos they are black in colour with two pair of horns, they are mostly found in grasslands, wet forests watered environment. Buffalos are the most unpredictable animals, they are in one way wonderful, but also cunning and dangerous of all animals, They are like boring cows, also due to their unpredictable nature they might seem peacefully grazing quietly, all of a sudden they may decide to challenge and will gallop. However, Buffalo are hopeful to one another, if a calf gets in trouble and pleads, its distress call will not only be responded to by its mother but the whole family will come its rescue.

Female Buffalos spend the whole of there life in their residence for 11 months after mating. The young ones are born very hairy, the mother suckles them for one and half years after that the calf is still dependent and stays close to the mother for care. After 4-5 years the bull will leave the mother and try to become the dominant male in a group. The Buffalos are ponderous and like to spend there time in the deep bush where there is fresh food, they graze more at night approximately six hours and the rest of time is spent wallowing in water.

Buffalos can live as long as 20 years in the wild, they also get high tempered, as they grow older as they do not like disturbance, they need more grass and more water. Also they eat grass and young shoots. If there is drought, Buffalos are the first to be affected and look very dull,

Buffalos usually calf after eleven months and give birth to one live young one .The life span for the Buffalo is 20 years and 26 years in the wild.
